Perperikon is situated in the Eastern Rhodope range, 15 km southeastern from Kurdzhali. It takes an area of about 12 sq. km and rises on a 470 m high peak.Perperikon is perched on a rocky peak at 1,400 ft above sea level guarded at its foot by the village of Gorna Krepost. The auriferous river Perperishka, which flows around it, The four parts of Perperikon were formed: the citadel, the Acropolis, the Palace or Temple, the northern and southern outer cities.Terrain observations indicate that they had streets, and secular and religious temples carved in the rock.Within the Acropolis there are a number of temples and secular buildings whose basements are carved directly in the rock.
